Waitrose expands nitrite-free bacon line as sales jump 34%
Retailers are adding nitrite-free bacon options as shoppers show concern over health risks linked to curing chemicals, and a new Denhay range is set for launch in 570 Tesco stores.
UK retailers are expanding “nitrite-free” meat offerings as consumer concern grows about the curing chemicals used in traditional bacon, even as some experts argue there is little evidence the alternatives are safer.
The Guardian Business reports that Waitrose has doubled its nitrite-free range over the past year, with sales up more than 34%. It added that Waitrose’s British roast and honey roast hams have risen more than 70% since launch.
In a separate development, Denhay, a Devon hand-dry-cured bacon specialist, is introducing two new back bacon lines in 570 Tesco stores from 21 September. The products, Made Without Nitrites Smoked Back Bacon and Made Without Nitrites Unsmoked Back Bacon, are both 200g and priced at £4.
