Anwar Ibrahim expected to unveil populist budget ahead of vote

The budget is set for Friday, with the ruling coalition facing pressure as a feud with Umno has raised calls for a snap national poll.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to present a populist budget on Friday, with experts saying the plan is designed to address voter concerns about the cost of living and access to essential services, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reports that Anwar’s coalition government is under mounting pressure amid a deepening feud with Umno, a key partner in his administration.

The Malay nationalist party has demanded a snap poll after defeating Anwar’s Pakatan Harapan coalition in recent state elections, raising the possibility that a national election could be called before the February 2028 deadline.

SCMP Economy adds that the political fallout could intensify if Pakatan Harapan fails to secure a strong result in the upcoming Melaka state poll.
