Indian equity trading volumes fall sharply in September quarter
Nifty 500 slid 4% as the average daily cash equity volume fell 11.7% to ₹1.29 trillion and index options premium volume dropped 27% to ₹63,326.
Trading activity in India’s stock markets fell sharply in the September quarter, with both cash and derivatives volumes declining as rising global bond yields, foreign outflows, and new regulatory curbs weighed on sentiment, according to exchange data reported by LiveMint.
The combined average daily equity cash volume across NSE and BSE declined 11.7% sequentially to ₹1.29 trillion in July to September, reversing a 13% rise in the prior quarter.
Index options also saw a bigger drop, with the combined average daily index-options premium volume falling 27% to ₹63,326.
Foreign portfolio investors sold ₹1.38 trillion of Indian equities in the fiscal year through 1 October, after a record ₹1.8 trillion of selling in FY26, and the Nifty 500 fell 4%, driven in part by soaring oil prices and foreign selling.
