BT agrees to buy TalkTalk in a deal framed as debt-free rescue

The UK government intervened in the takeover, with culture minister Lisa Nandy warning that TalkTalk disruption could affect hospitals, schools, and emergency care.

BT has struck a deal to acquire TalkTalk on a debt-free basis, in an arrangement described as a rescue for the broadband provider. The transaction also includes plans to save 900 jobs, according to the report.

The UK’s culture minister, Lisa Nandy, stepped in to intervene in BT Group’s takeover of TalkTalk, citing risks to public services and vulnerable customers if broadband services were disrupted. Nandy said phone and broadband are vital national infrastructure and warned that failures would pose a risk to life and public services, including hospitals, schools, and emergency care.
