China sees strong growth in services exports alongside goods surplus
In the first seven months of 2026, services exports rose 17.1% year on year, with personal cultural and entertainment services up 57.8%.
China’s large goods trade surplus has drawn focus on sectors such as electric vehicles and batteries, but a less visible shift is taking place in services, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet said China’s services exports rose 17.1% year on year in the first seven months of 2026, while exports of personal cultural and entertainment services surged 57.8%.
Despite the growth, China still runs a trade deficit in services, and services are not close to replacing manufacturing as the core driver of the overall trade balance, SCMP Economy reported.
SCMP Economy added that digital services can scale globally without factories, containers, or ports, which helps explain why services could expand even as trade tensions target manufactured goods.
