FERMA urges insurers and firms to align contract cycles

FERMA President Philippe Cotelle said the annual insurance renewal model mismatches typical 3-to-5-year corporate planning.

Philippe Cotelle, president of FERMA, urged closer collaboration between businesses and the insurance industry to address what he called a structural misalignment between annual insurance renewals and longer corporate planning horizons.

Speaking at the FERMA Forum 2026 in Rotterdam, Cotelle argued that insurers and clients should look beyond the traditional yearly cycle because corporate operational planning often runs on 3-to-5-year timelines, which he said makes it difficult to plan for activities like building a factory or developing a product for only one year.

Cotelle also warned that the current partnership model can be fragile, because either side can opt out when market dynamics or exposure conditions change, and he characterized arrangements that last only when outcomes are favorable as more transactional than truly partnership-based.
