Gallagher data shows widespread retirement plan skepticism among employees
Gallagher said it found only 28% of employees believe their current retirement strategy will meet their goals, despite 85% of employers offering retirement benefits.
Gallagher benchmarking data highlights a gap between retirement plan access and employee confidence in outcomes. According to Insurance Business, 85% of American employers offer retirement benefits, and most use auto enrollment, yet only 28% of employees say their current retirement savings strategy will enable them to achieve their goals.
The data also points to limited planning. Insurance Business reported that just 23% of employees have ever developed a financial plan with an advisor, while employees who have a plan are far more likely to rate their situation positively, with 81% describing it as good or excellent versus 50% of those without a plan rating it fair or poor.
Gallagher attributed the snapshot to responses from 3,717 US organizations collected between January and March 2026, supplemented by its 2026 Financial Health Assessment. The report found auto enrollment is increasingly common, with 57% of employers using it, and immediate eligibility for defined contribution plans rising five points from 2025 to 42%.
