HKU seeks more lab space in Northern Metropolis to expand research

HKU’s new vice-president for research, Anderson Shum Ho-cheung, said grant applications can take time and returns on investment may be slow.

The University of Hong Kong is looking to secure more laboratory space in the Northern Metropolis university town to expand research capacity and attract talent, its vice-president for research said. Professor Anderson Shum Ho-cheung, who took up the role in August, made the case for additional lab space as HKU develops its Northern Metropolis presence.

Shum also called for more government funding, saying grant applications take time and returns on investment could be slow, according to SCMP Economy. He said the university’s research development would align with the government’s push to integrate education, technology, industry, and talent to speed up Northern Metropolis progress.

HKU described a closed-loop approach that moves discoveries from the lab to industry and back, fostering industry partnerships and start-ups, SCMP Economy reported. The university said successful ventures then feed new research problems back to scientists.
