Hong Kong sees surge in mainland visitors at start of Golden Week
Immigration Department data showed 277,304 mainland visitors arrived on Oct. 1, up 19.1% from the same day last year, before arrivals moderated over subsequent days.
Mainland Chinese arrivals to Hong Kong surged at the start of the National Day “golden week” holiday, then eased toward last year’s levels, according to Immigration Department figures cited by SCMP Economy.
On Oct. 1, 277,304 mainland visitors arrived, up 19.1% from 232,751 on the first day of last year’s holiday and 25.1% higher than 221,644 in 2024.
Tourism sector representatives attributed part of the early rush to Hong Kong’s fireworks display, and lawmaker Perry Yiu Pak-leung said the holiday this year was one day shorter, leading some visitors to start trips earlier.
After the first day, the increase moderated sharply, with mainland arrivals rising 5.4% year on year to 234,007 on Oct. 2, staying virtually unchanged at 221,566 on Oct. 3, and up 2.3% to 206,180 on Oct. 4.
