Mainland Chinese prefer coercion over military force on Taiwan, survey shows

The poll, conducted from April 16 to June 26, found low approval of the US but support for engagement with Washington on trade and security.

Mainland Chinese respondents say they prefer coercion over military force to address the Taiwan reunification issue, according to results from the latest China Pulse survey covered by SCMP Economy.

The survey, conducted between April 16 and June 26, also found that public opinion toward the United States remains low, even as many respondents favor engaging Washington on trade and security.

SCMP Economy reports the findings were drawn from a biannual survey conducted by The Carter Centre with Emory University, and the polling period straddled the first summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing and came before the second summit in Washington last month.

Nick Zeller, lead researcher with The Carter Centre, said the survey results align with domestic messaging in China about Taiwan, according to SCMP Economy.
