Nifty, Sensex slide sharply in September, prompting a gold or stocks debate
India's Nifty 50 fell 6.1% in September to 22,620.45, while MCX gold dropped about 3% and MCX silver fell more than 5.4%.
Indian equity benchmarks logged steep monthly losses in September 2026, with the Nifty 50 down 6.1% to 22,620.45 and the BSE Sensex down 5.8% to 72,480.29, marking the second straight monthly decline for both indices.
LiveMint Markets also said precious metals weakened in the same period, with MCX gold prices falling about 3% and MCX silver dropping more than 5.4% in September.
With volatility high, experts cited by LiveMint Markets urged investors not to put all fresh capital into equities at once, instead diversifying across commodities and other asset classes while building a portfolio.
Choice Wealths Akshat Garg characterized the sell-off as a correction rather than a collapse, noting that the Nifty has fallen to around 22,200, near its 2026 low, and that valuations have come down meaningfully.
