Pentagon stops using Anthropic AI tools after supply chain blacklist
The Pentagon previously said it would halt use by late August, but BBC says Anthropic's Claude was still being used last week.
The US Department of Defence has ceased using Anthropic's AI tools, an official told the BBC, months after the Pentagon designated the company a supply chain risk on national security grounds.
In February, Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth labelled Anthropic a supply chain risk and said the Pentagon would stop using the tools by late August, according to the BBC.
The BBC reported that people familiar with the matter said Anthropic's Claude model was still being used as recently as last week for research, analysis, intelligence gathering, and military operations, and that it was viewed as a critical tool for sorting through large volumes of information.
The BBC also said it was not clear why the Pentagon cut ties entirely now, and that an Anthropic spokesman declined to comment when asked about the department's statement.
