Spain’s Sanchez calls early election amid housing crisis backlash
The election is set for November 29, after right wing opposition parties blocked emergency decrees aimed at curbing evictions and real estate speculation.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced early elections after his government lost a key parliamentary vote on emergency measures tied to the country’s housing crisis, according to SCMP Economy. The announcement came after weeks of public anger over housing affordability.
The legislative defeat followed protests across Spain, triggered in part by public outrage after the televised eviction of an 87 year old woman in Madrid last month. SCMP Economy reports right wing opposition parties teamed up to scuttle two emergency decrees in Parliament covering measures to reduce evictions and real estate speculation.
With the setback, SCMP Economy says speculation grew that Sanchez could move up the national election from next year. The vote will be held on November 29.
