Survey finds most data center leaders prioritize growth over resilience

Global compute capacity is expected to nearly triple to about 220 gigawatts by 2030, with about $5.2 trillion of roughly $6.7 trillion in planned infrastructure spending aimed at AI workloads.

More than 90% of digital infrastructure leaders say they experienced a material disruption to their digital infrastructure in the past five years, according to research sponsored by FM, with a survey of 1,800 leaders across the data center value chain in 21 countries conducted in March and April 2026.

The survey also found that when leaders face trade-offs, more than 80% prioritize growth, efficiency, and AI deployment over long-term resilience.

Risk & Insurance reports that global compute capacity is expected to nearly triple to about 220 gigawatts by 2030, supported by about $6.7 trillion in infrastructure spending, including $5.2 trillion earmarked for AI workloads.

The report, based on the Economist Enterprise survey, points to a mismatch between disruption experience and planning priorities among data center operators and related industry participants.
