Eurozone retail sales rise 0.1% in August after July drop
Non-food retail sales excluding automotive fuel climbed 0.5% month over month, while automotive fuel sales volumes fell 1.9%.
Eurozone retail sales increased just 0.1% month over month in August, following a 0.6% decline in July, and the result missed expectations for a 0.2% rise, according to Action Forex.
On a year over year basis, retail trade volume rose 0.8%, up from a revised 0.4% in July, reflecting a modest stabilization in household demand after the prior month’s fall.
The details were mixed, with non-food sales excluding automotive fuel gaining 0.5% month over month, while food, drinks and tobacco rose 0.1%. The biggest drag came from automotive fuel, where sales volumes declined 1.9% month over month.
Performance varied across major economies, as Germany rebounded 1.3% month over month after a 3.2% drop in July, while France fell 1.1% after the prior month’s gain; Action Forex said the overall picture suggests a tentative recovery in discretionary spending outside fuel but remains uneven.
