Hong Kong pledges tougher penalties after Stanley construction controversy
Hong Kong chief executive John Lee Ka-chiu said the city will strengthen its construction oversight and increase penalties to deter building violations, following repeated scandals.
Hong Kong will strengthen its construction regulatory regime and impose stiffer penalties for building violations, the city leader pledged following substandard construction scandals, including a new controversy involving a luxury residential development in Stanley, according to SCMP Economy.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said the issues tied to professional standards, quality and safety in Hong Kong’s construction works, as he declined to comment on details of the latest incident amid an ongoing Buildings Department investigation.
The report says the property owner bought the residence in 2024 for about HK$100 million, and discovered quality issues when renovations began in August last year.
