North Korea landmines injure South Korean soldiers near DMZ

Seoul said the Sept. 21 blast near the military demarcation line left one soldier losing a foot, and it called for Pyongyang to apologize and hold talks.

North Korea’s landmines along the heavily fortified border with South Korea have escalated tensions after an explosion near the military demarcation line left three South Korean soldiers wounded last month, according to SCMP Economy.

South Korea blames Pyongyang for the Sept. 21 blast, in which one soldier lost a foot, and said its foreign ministry is preparing a response aimed at forcing an apology without detailing the measures it will take.

The ministry also urged the North to hold talks on the demarcation line, adding that military personnel are forbidden from crossing the MDL under the 1953 armistice agreement.

The outlet described the DMZ as a 4 km wide area that serves as the effective land border between the two countries and noted the longer demilitarized zone line is sparsely marked.
