140,000 home batteries helped push 580 MW to California’s grid

The coordinated discharge happened during a Sept. 9, 2026 heat wave, for a three hour window.

On the evening of Sept. 9, 2026, a heat wave pushing electricity demand across California toward its limits coincided with a synchronized response from residential storage, according to OilPrice.

More than 140,000 home batteries began discharging at the same time, sending more than 580 megawatts of power into the state’s grid over a three hour window.

OilPrice said the episode delivered output similar to that of a large conventional power plant, without anyone breaking ground on new generation or burning fuel.

The article highlights the role of “virtual power plants,” where existing batteries can be coordinated to provide grid support during tight demand periods.
