Allianz finds business interruption claims rising while frequency stays steady

Allianz Commercial analyzed 7,888 business interruption claims worth about €6.74 billion from 2021 to 2025, and said the average BI payout now exceeds €850,000.

Allianz Commercial says the average size of business interruption (BI) insurance claims is climbing rapidly even as claim frequency remains steady, according to its analysis of 7,888 BI claims valued at roughly €6.74 billion between January 2021 and December 2025.

In the company’s data, BI claim severity has been rising by more than 30% annually over the past two years. The average BI claim now exceeds €850,000, about 70% higher than the average associated property damage claim of close to €500,000, widening the gap between repair costs and the cost of being unable to operate.

The report also points to fire and explosion as key drivers, accounting for more than 40% of the total value of claims analyzed, around €2.9 billion. It said fire and explosion was responsible for nine of the 10 costliest man

The company noted that in a recent case it analyzed, physical damage from a fire in a small manufacturing unit was relatively contained, while the BI loss that followed ran into the nine figures across the wider corporate group, with the supply chain structure acting as a multiplier.
