Canada’s mining chief urges faster approvals and investment tax breaks

Pierre Gratton said Canadian copper output fell 23% and nickel production dropped 44% over the past decade, and he called on firms to convert new political support into new mines.

Mining.com reports that outgoing Mining Association of Canada CEO Pierre Gratton said Canada’s mining industry has secured political backing to reverse years of decline, but companies now need to turn that support into building new mines.

Gratton, who has led MAC for more than 15 years, used his final address to highlight faster project reviews and proposed tax breaks for mine investment, saying faster permitting and targeted incentives are needed to translate political momentum into new supply.

He also cited recent policy changes in Ottawa that, in his view, create an opening for miners as Canada and its allies look for alternatives to Chinese-dominated supply chains, while warning success will depend on preserving community trust.

Gratton said Canadian copper output has fallen 23% and nickel production has dropped 44% over the past decade, and he will retire Dec. 31, with MAC senior vice-president Ben Chalmers taking over Jan. 1.
