Nationwide says E&S carriers can use underwriting discipline and data
In a Q&A published Oct. 7, 2026, Nationwide discussed how E&S placements are getting more complex as standard-line insurance becomes more sophisticated.
Nationwide, in an interview with Risk & Insurance, said the E&S market is seeing rising placement complexity as the wider insurance industry becomes more sophisticated, driving more complex business into excess and surplus lines.
The company pointed to changes in tort liability and regulatory reform as ongoing factors reshaping the risk landscape, according to John Anthony, Senior Vice President of Nationwide E&S Wholesale Contract P&C and Excess.
Nationwide also emphasized that underwriting discipline, data, and stronger wholesale partnerships can help E&S carriers navigate the evolving risk environment and identify opportunities within it.
The interview, edited for length and clarity, was published Oct. 7, 2026, and centers on analytics, brokerage, emerging risks, and underwriting risk in the E&S marketplace.
