Sensex and Nifty fall as crude prices jump and bond yields rise
The sell-off wiped out more than ₹10 lakh crore in investor wealth, with Nifty closing at 22,216 and Sensex ending at 71,461.
Indian equities suffered heavy losses in Thursday trading as a broad sell-off pulled the key indices down nearly 2%, with sentiment hit by a sharp jump in crude oil prices and surging global bond yields, according to LiveMint Markets.
The report said investors grew more concerned about inflation and economic growth, pointing to elevated crude oil prices and the RBI’s recent 25-basis-point rate hike that has raised fears the central bank could stay restrictive or deliver further hikes if price pressures persist.
Nifty slid 1.7% to settle at 22,216, its lowest level in 2026, while the Sensex closed 1.6% lower at 71,461, the outlet added.
LiveMint Markets also said the sell-off erased over ₹10 lakh crore of investor wealth, with selling accelerating through the first half of the session and worsening toward the close.
