China’s former Olympic diver faces backlash over mother’s controlling behavior

A former Chinese Olympic diving champion has drawn online criticism after appearing on a reality TV show, where her mother’s controlling behavior sparked debate, according to SCMP Economy.

The article says Zhang Jiaqi, 22, won gold in the women’s synchronized 10-metre platform event at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, and she has 3.3 million followers on Douyin.

It adds that she began diving at age six and won her first national title at 12, with years of training leaving her with injuries to her shoulders, back and feet.

SCMP Economy reports that Zhang retired last November.
