Desk adjuster staffing requests rise to 200 for major events

The surge reflects carriers relying more on remote claims work as experienced adjusters retire and as files need to be closed faster, Mid-America Catastrophe Services says.

Insurance Business reports that staffing requests for desk adjusters are increasing as experienced claims veterans retire, with independent adjusting firm Mid-America Catastrophe Services receiving bigger orders from carriers for major events.

Henry Maley, senior vice president of sales at Mobile, Alabama-based Mid-America Catastrophe Services, said calls that once asked for 25 to 50 desk adjusters now often request 100 to 200.

Maley said desk adjusters typically work remotely using photos, drone imagery, documents, and phone calls, rather than visiting properties, and carriers bring in independent firms when their own staff runs short.

He added that the industry recently came close to a capacity problem during the 2024 hurricane season, when the firm said it was one hurricane away from not having enough people to handle hurricane claims.
