Zhejiang urges tighter oversight of tech platforms' traffic power
Zhejiang’s publicity department said public feed traffic should be treated like a semi-public utility, not a private asset held by platforms.
Communist Party officials in eastern China’s Zhejiang province called for tighter oversight of major internet platforms and their so-called “traffic power,” warning that online traffic and algorithms can shape public discussion and sentiment.
According to commentary posted by the publicity department of the Zhejiang provincial party committee on social media on Thursday, traffic should not be viewed as merely data, and public feed traffic should be treated as a semi-public utility rather than “a private asset owned by tech platforms.”
