79 dormant domains were used to spoof a real estate team

HousingWire reports email authentication protections cut unauthorized messages from 235 to 43 in five weeks after the issue was identified.

HousingWire reports that Nashville agent Gary Ashton discovered criminals were using 79 dormant domains to spoof his real estate team in fraudulent emails traced to China and Russia.

The outlet says email authentication protections reduced unauthorized messages from 235 to 43 over five weeks.

HousingWire also notes that experts recommend brokerages inventory their domains, deploy security protocols, and that about 35% to 40% of monitored teams experience spoofing.

Ashton, founder of The Ashton Real Estate Group at REMAX Advantage, had accumulated roughly 400 domains over the years, including names intended for future expansion, marketing campaigns, and brand protection, HousingWire reported.
