US regulators probe Tesla robotaxis over speeding in school zones
NHTSA said the preliminary probe covers an estimated 1,000 vehicles from the 2026 model year, after evaluating a petition backed by video of incidents.
Tesla is facing scrutiny from US auto-safety regulators over claims that its driverless taxis using automated systems exceed posted speed limits in active school zones, Insurance Journal reports.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it is evaluating a petition that includes video evidence of several incidents involving Tesla Cybercab and Model Y vehicles, based on documents posted to the NHTSA website.
NHTSA said the preliminary probe covers an estimated 1,000 vehicles from the 2026 model year, and the agency has not yet decided whether to grant or deny a request for a full investigation.
The new probe could further complicate Tesla’s robotaxi expansion plans, which launched last year but remains limited to a small number of cities and, in some cases, uses human safety monitors.
