Crypto lobby’s $189M campaign faces scrutiny as CLARITY Act nears vote
A Public Citizen report says the crypto industry has spent $189 million so far to influence the 2026 midterms as Senate negotiators target a floor vote before the August recess.
The crypto industry’s growing political push around the proposed CLARITY Act, a long-awaited crypto market structure bill, is drawing closer scrutiny as Congress nears a potential floor vote, according to Cointelegraph.
Cointelegraph cites a Public Citizen report that the crypto lobby has spent $189 million so far to influence the 2026 midterm elections, with critics calling it an effort to buy influence and industry supporters arguing it is a response to anti-crypto forces that have dominated politics since 2022.
Cointelegraph also highlights statements from Colin McLaren, head of government relations at the Solana Policy Institute, who said the political infrastructure for advancing pro-crypto legislation was built over time by groups including Fairshake, Cedar Innovation Foundation, Stand With Crypto, and the Blockchain Association.
Separately, Cointelegraph notes that on July 3 the Major County Sheriffs of America shifted from opposing the CLARITY Act to a neutral position after discussions over Section 604, also called the Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act, with the story indicating that the negotiations are still underway as lawmakers work toward possible timing before Congress’s August recess.
