Qatar sends negotiators to Iran in bid to lower Strait of Hormuz risks
Talks coordinated with the United States aim to address navigation disputes in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for global energy markets.
Qatar has dispatched negotiators to Iran for meetings with Iranian officials in a renewed effort to de-escalate tensions and create conditions for further negotiations, according to an account attributed to Reuters and a source familiar with the matter.
The discussions are being held in coordination with the United States, and they are intended to prevent additional deterioration in relations after a recent escalation between Washington and Tehran. Reuters also said the talks are meant to address the implementation of the United States-Iran memorandum of understanding, along with issues that contributed to the latest rise in tensions.
Among the topics under discussion are disputes over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important shipping route for global energy markets. The initiative could be watched closely by financial markets because progress in easing Gulf tensions may help reduce geopolitical risk premiums across energy and other risk-sensitive assets.
Oil prices remained supported after the announcement, with West Texas Intermediate trading around $72 at the time of writing on Friday, up 0.42% on the day.
