Beijing renews attacks on South China Sea tribunal ruling

The comments mark the 10th anniversary of the 2013 UNCLOS arbitration case Manila brought, which invalidated Beijing’s asserted historical and economic rights.

Beijing has again denounced an international tribunal over the South China Sea ruling, calling it “thoroughly illegal” and saying the decision remains a “lingering toxic legacy” that must be cleared urgently, according to SCMP Economy citing comments published in People’s Daily.

In remarks attributed to Jing Quan, Beijing’s ambassador to the Philippines, the Chinese side said Manila’s most important task is to abandon illusions and remove the “stumbling block” to allow bilateral relations to return to a better track.

The dispute centers on China’s sweeping sovereignty claims over nearly all islands and rock features in the South China Sea, as well as rights to adjacent waters, which have fueled long running clashes with other claimants including the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei.

In 2013, Manila launched an arbitration case under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the tribunal in The Hague ultimately ruled it could not decide questions of sovereignty, while invalidating Beijing’s claimed historical and economic rights over most features.
