Philippines and Vietnam plan hotline and coastguard coordination in SCS

The two countries also agreed to improve coastguard coordination to help prevent accidental clashes in disputed waters.

Alyssa Chen of SCMP Economy reports that the Philippines and Vietnam are upgrading their South China Sea cooperation, aiming to support peace, stability, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the region.

According to SCMP Economy, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos said the two countries remain committed to peaceful resolution of disputes in line with international law.

As part of the upgrade, Manila and Hanoi agreed to implement a hotline and improve coordination between their coastguards to help prevent accidental clashes in disputed waters.

SCMP Economy notes the steps arrive just weeks before the 10th anniversary of a ruling by The Hague’s Permanent Court of Arbitration that dismissed China’s expansive claims to most South China Sea features, a decade after Beijing rejected the decision.
