ICE suspends immigration-related vehicle stops after Texas and Maine shootings
The move followed a deadly stop in Biddeford, Maine, and came despite DHS saying the officer feared for public safety.
ICE has suspended vehicle stops tied to immigration enforcement, according to two sources briefed on the matter, after ICE agents fatally shot two men in separate incidents in Texas and Maine, six days apart.
The policy change followed a shooting one day earlier in Biddeford, Maine, near Portland, where the Department of Homeland Security said the officer opened fire after fearing for public safety when the driver tried to flee during an attempted stop.
The DHS statement did not explain how the driver posed a public threat or whether it justified use of deadly force, and the incident has not yet had publicly available video showing the moment of the shooting.
ICE policy says deadly force is authorized only when there is imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death to the officer or another person, and it is not allowed solely to prevent a fleeing suspect, Reuters reported.
