US lawmakers hear calls to accelerate US tech while slowing China
Speakers urged expanding the “Silicon Shield” concept beyond semiconductors, including drones and other technologies tied to vital supply chains, and reducing US bureaucracy to speed development.
China was framed as an “existential threat” to the United States at a Congressional round table, where witnesses said Washington must slow Beijing’s technology momentum while accelerating American advances to avoid falling behind, according to SCMP Economy.
The discussion centered on strategies to counter China’s push across multiple fronts, including calls to expand the proposed “Silicon Shield,” which aims to keep China out of semiconductor supply chains, to also cover drone and other key technologies.
Witnesses also urged the US to reduce bureaucracy, increase focus on emerging fields such as quantum, and respond to China’s bid to shape global standards in areas including telecommunications.
SCMP Economy reported that Piero Tozzi of the American First Policy Institute told lawmakers China is a systemic rival seeking to challenge and displace the US role in the post-war order and is attempting to set technology standards.
