US pays $81bn in refunds after tariffs ruled illegal
The refunds come after the Supreme Court found the Trump tariffs were illegal, forcing payouts to firms affected by the policy.
The US government has begun paying billions of dollars in refunds to companies that were hit by Donald Trump’s so-called “liberation day” tariffs, after the tariffs were ruled illegal, according to Guardian Economics.
The outlet said the US has paid out $81bn, equivalent to about £61bn, during the current fiscal year as part of the refunds process.
The reporting frames the payments as an enforcement consequence of the Supreme Court ruling, which invalidated the tariffs’ legality and triggered reimbursement to affected businesses.
