China tops global science rankings, Russian scientist says
A Russian materials scientist cited China’s share of global research output and the 2026 Nature Index placing, saying it reflects both volume and quality.
A Russian chemist and materials scientist said China’s rise in science is being recognized globally, pointing to his recent honor from Chinese President Xi Jinping. SCMP Economy reports that Artem Oganov received China’s International Science and Technology Cooperation Award during a ceremony in Beijing last week, and described the recognition as evidence he was “on the right track.”
Oganov, a distinguished professor at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow and a long-time China collaborator, said China has moved beyond being a volume leader to delivering quality improvements. SCMP Economy reports he noted China now accounts for a third of global scientific publications.
He also referenced the latest 2026 Nature Index analysis, which ranks China as the top scientific power based on more than 125,000 research articles published across 178 leading publications in 2025, with the United States second. According to SCMP Economy, Oganov said the shift from the US to China underscores how quickly the scientific landscape is changing.
