Hong Kong police raid two independent bookstores, arrest several
The raids targeted Have a Nice Stay and Greenfield Book Store, with the shops independently run and focused on humanities titles.
Hong Kong police conducted a raid on two independently owned bookstores on Wednesday, arresting multiple people and seizing books, according to the South China Morning Post. SCMP Economy reports that national security police searched Have a Nice Stay bookshop in Prince Edward and Greenfield Book Store in Mong Kok. Both shops are independently owned and focus on humanities and related topics. The outlet also notes that Have a Nice Stay had announced its closure, saying it would stop operations on August 30. Owners attributed the decision to financial losses and uncertainty over what books would be considered problematic.
The raid came as Hong Kong’s annual book fair opened at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday, and SCMP Economy said neither shop had taken part in the event.
