Trump nominee for DNI says he can shape economic strategy with China
In a confirmation hearing, lawmakers questioned his threat assessment approach, including pushback on whether drug trafficking should be weighed above China or Russia.
The US nominee for director of national intelligence told lawmakers he could play an active role in shaping the United States’ economic strategy with China, during a Senate confirmation hearing that framed Beijing as a major economic and geopolitical challenge, according to SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy reported that Jay Clayton, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, addressed intelligence issues during the hearing and faced questions after lawmakers pushed back on how his threat assessment was characterized.
The hearing included a dispute over threat ranking, with a Democratic senator from Virginia, Mark Warner, saying he strongly disagreed with the idea that drug trafficking should be more important at that point than the threat posed by China or Russia, the outlet said.
Clayton clarified that he did not rank the threats in order, SCMP Economy added, as lawmakers emphasized China’s importance as a geopolitical risk.
