Labour insiders question Shabana Mahmood’s economic alignment
Business leaders are trying to gauge how a Mahmood chancellorship would affect the UK’s net zero agenda after Andy Burnham’s promise of pro-growth policy.
The Guardian Economics reports that some Labour insiders are questioning whether Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is aligned with Andy Burnham’s policy priorities as she emerges as a frontrunner to move into the Treasury if Labour forms government.
Burnham has said he would deliver “good growth in every postcode and hope in every heart,” and business groups are now focused on whether Mahmood would set a pro-business course for the economy.
The article says some industry figures had been wary of Ed Miliband, partly due to his perceived left-leaning reputation and his strong support for Britain’s net zero ambitions, including holding firm on decarbonisation targets that other countries have scaled back.
However, Mahmood is described as an “unknown quantity” for many companies because she has not previously worked in economic or business-facing roles, even as a few insiders in specific sectors, such as security firms tied to immigration and justice systems, characterize her as well respected and practical in briefings.
