Bitcoin ETFs face sharp gains and drawdowns, analyst warns
The Block notes a Bloomberg ETF analyst drew a comparison between the early surge in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust and the larger pattern seen in gold’s GLD in 2011.
The Block highlighted an outlook for Bitcoin ETFs that mirrors the boom-and-bust cycle seen in gold exchange traded funds, citing a comparison drawn by Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas.
Balchunas pointed to how BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, IBIT, reached a milestone of more than $100 billion in a relatively short period, framing it as potentially similar to gold’s early run.
According to The Block, he then contrasted that rapid rise with the “painful drawdowns” that followed in GLD’s 2011 history, implying volatility risk even during strong inflows.
The comparison centers on how quickly markets can shift from spectacular gains to sharper declines for ETF investors.
