Foundry Digital lets mining clients vote on BIP-110 soft fork

The hashrate-weighted vote runs from July 6 to July 15, with Foundry expecting signaling to continue through early August at block 961,632.

Foundry Digital, a major Bitcoin mining pool operator, said it will allow clients using its pool to vote on BIP-110, a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal aimed at temporarily restricting spam on the blockchain.

According to Bitcoin Magazine, miners will be able to signal by using their hashrate, voting either for or against the proposal. If BIP-110 passes, a backward-compatible soft fork would be activated, limiting non-monetary data carried in transactions.

BIP-110, also called the “reduced data temporary soft fork,” would cap most new outputs to 34 bytes, restore an 83-byte limit on OP_RETURN outputs, and reject data pushes above 256 bytes. Supporters argue this would help keep Bitcoin functioning as peer-to-peer money, while opponents such as Strategy founder Michael Saylor and Blockstream co-founder Adam Back warn it could turn a policy disagreement into a consensus change that may invalidate fee-paying transactions.

Under Foundry’s voting process, each vote is weighted based on a pool account’s average 10-day hashrate between July 6 and July 15. Foundry said it will base signaling on the majority of hashrate-weighted votes, expects the signaling window to run through early August at block 961,632, and will start by signaling “No” until “Yes” votes exceed 51% of voting hashrate.
