British Sugar weighs closure of Cantley factory, affecting 100+ jobs

The company is proposing to close the Cantley facility from the end of February 2027 and focus beet processing at sites in Wissington, Bury St Edmunds, and Newark.

BBC Business reports British Sugar says it could shut one of its four factories, putting more than 100 jobs at risk.

The firm is proposing to close its Cantley facility in Norfolk Broads from the end of February 2027, citing plans to improve efficiency and support the long-term future of the UK sugar industry.

A consultation will be held, with Cantley set to operate normally this year while discussions begin with Unite and other employee representatives.

British Sugar managing director Keith Packer said the proposal was not taken lightly, and an MP for Broadland and Fakenham warned the loss-making business and declining long-term sugar demand could also raise costs for Norfolk farmers and ripple into secondary businesses.
