Hong Kong July rainfall exceeds norms by 23% as warnings rise

Hong Kong recorded 474.7mm of rain in the first 20 days of July, and the Observatory has issued 48 rainstorm warnings since June, nearly double the level of last year.

Hong Kong’s rainfall so far this month has already exceeded typical July levels by 23 per cent, according to a review of Observatory data cited by the South China Morning Post.

The review found the city recorded 474.7mm of rainfall in the first 20 days of July, topping the usual monthly total of 385.8mm. It also reported 600.5mm of rainfall in June, 22 per cent above normal.

The Observatory said Hong Kong is expected to face additional rainstorms over the weekend after weeks of heavy rain as a tropical cyclone neared the city, the paper reported.

Since June, the Observatory has issued 48 rainstorm warnings, nearly double the 25 alerts issued during the same period last year, and last month included three black rainstorm warnings, the highest alert level in Hong Kong’s three tier system.
