China braces for up to three typhoons in coming 10 days
China’s flood-control agencies held an emergency meeting to prepare for another “complex and severe” storm risk as swollen rivers and fully saturated soil raise flash-flood and landslide hazards.
Southern and eastern China are bracing for another round of severe weather after twin typhoons and widespread flooding earlier this month, according to SCMP Economy.
China’s top flood control and drought relief body held an emergency inter-agency meeting on Wednesday to coordinate disaster prevention ahead of the expected 12th named storm of the season, with participation from the China Meteorological Administration, the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Officials warned that ongoing nationwide rainfall and the aftermath of recent storms leave rivers and lakes swollen in some areas, with soil fully saturated, which sharply increases the risk of flash floods, mountain torrents and landslides.
The National Meteorological Centre expects up to three typhoons to likely form in the northwestern Pacific and the South China Sea over the next 10 days.
