Anglian Water CEO receives £1.9m despite 2025-26 bonus ban
The Guardian reports overall pay for water company executives and CFOs rose 1.5% to £25.3m across analyzed companies even as water bills increased and drought measures expanded.
Water company bosses’ pay rose despite a government bonus ban, according to an exclusive analysis by the Guardian Business covering firms that serve most of England and Wales.
The outlet reports that Anglian Water CEO Mark Thurston received £1.9 million, including a £500,000 retention payment, even though the bonus ban is meant to take effect for 2025-26.
It also reports that United Utilities CEO Louise Beardmore received the biggest package at £2.5 million, which was £1.1 million higher than the previous year.
Overall, the analysis found reported pay packets rose 1.5% to £25.3 million for chief executives and chief financial officers in the year, amid public anger over bills, pollution, and related environmental problems including sewage spills and drought-linked hosepipe bans.
The revelation, the Guardian Business says, is likely to add pressure on UK Labour mayor Andy Burnham to clamp down on the water sector, with Burnham previously pointing to the need for more public control and suggesting Thames could face temporary government ownership.
