Big banks step back into commercial real-estate lending

After lenders largely pulled back from the segment, big banks are resuming activity as market participants previously warned about a wave of defaults.

Lenders are increasing exposure to commercial real-estate lending again, according to WSJ Markets.

The outlet notes that the pullback happened only a few years earlier, when investors and analysts warned the sector could face elevated default risk.

WSJ Markets frames the return of bank lending as a shift from that earlier caution, with lenders now “wading back” into the category.
