Pakistan goods transporters warn of nationwide strike over fuel hikes
The transport alliance cited the government’s decision to review and potentially change fuel prices daily, saying frequent diesel increases could force many road freight firms to close.
Pakistan’s goods transporters have warned they could launch a nationwide strike amid rising fuel costs, adding pressure to an economy already under strain from the Middle East crisis, according to OilPrice.
In a statement carried by local media Friday, Malik Shehzad Awan, president of the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance, said transporters across Pakistan should stay prepared and that a nationwide strike call could be issued at any time.
The alliance criticized the government’s fuel-price hikes, linking them to renewed hostilities in the Middle East and higher crude prices. It also attacked the policy to review and potentially change fuel prices on a daily basis as “anti-transport policies.”
OilPrice said the industry is concerned that frequent diesel price increases could leave many road freight businesses facing closure, after Pakistan began revising gasoline and diesel prices on a daily basis effective July 21. The government says the mechanism is intended to make pricing more transparent and align domestic fuel prices with international oil-market moves.
