Two Peking University alumni win Fields Medal at under-40 math awards
The International Congress of Mathematicians recognized Wang Hong and Deng Yu as the first under-40 Fields Medal recipients from their cohort, highlighting rising China-led research standards.
The International Congress of Mathematicians announced that Wang Hong and Deng Yu, both Peking University alumni, won the Fields Medal this week.
SCMP Economy reports the awards went to mathematicians under 40, with the outlet noting both winners entered the top Chinese university in 2007.
Zhejiang University professor Cai Tianxin said China’s research standards have caught up with the West, and that a more flexible academic environment is helping younger scientists earn global recognition.
