Hong Kong lawmakers take Beijing trip to shape first 5-year plan
The study trip included a meeting with Xia Baolong of China’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, and lawmakers plan to use the experience to strengthen Legco’s research and proposal role for the five-year plan.
Hong Kong lawmakers say they gained new insights to help the city develop its first five-year plan after a week-long study trip to Beijing that ended Saturday, according to SCMP Economy.
Legislative Council president Starry Lee Wai-king said the delegation met Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, at the Great Hall of the People. Lee added that lawmakers will use the experience to strengthen Legco’s research role and craft proposals that reflect broad interests across different parties and businesses.
Lee said the trip also involved briefing mainland Chinese officials on Hong Kong’s latest local economic and social developments, while experts offered recommendations for the five-year plan. She cited Xia’s encouragement for lawmakers to support governance, development momentum, and efforts to address long-standing problems and residents’ pressing concerns, SCMP Economy reported.
