Beijing faces choice as US indexes hit record highs
The contrast between US market optimism and Beijing’s cautious approach is prompting calls for regulators to shift from capital risk prevention toward wealth creation and preservation.
Early July record highs for the S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow Jones Industrial Average were met with praise from US President Donald Trump, who pointed to the rally as evidence of an American economic revival, according to SCMP Economy.
The article says the US stock market boom has left Beijing with an “awkward choice,” either sticking to its cautious messaging for capital markets or attempting to spark a rival rally to limit money moving out.
SCMP Economy reports that Xiao Geng, associate dean of the School of Public Policy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, argued Chinese regulators need to change their framework for capital markets.
He said regulators should transition from “pure risk prevention” to building, accumulating and preserving wealth, highlighting a potential policy shift in how China approaches its exchanges.
