China chipmakers' profits jump 2,579.5% in first half on AI demand

Profits for China’s major industrial enterprises rose 18.7% to 4 trillion yuan as electronics profits climbed 97% year on year, according to data cited by the National Bureau of Statistics.

China’s major chip manufacturers saw profits surge 2,579.5% in the first half of 2026, driven by demand for artificial intelligence and computing power, according to data cited by the National Bureau of Statistics, as reported by SCMP Economy.

The NBS attributed the increase to faster integration of AI across multiple industries, which boosted demand for computing, and said the broader electronics industry’s profits rose 97% year on year, with electronics playing a key role in growth of total industrial profits.

During the first half, profits for China’s major industrial enterprises, defined as firms with annual revenue above 20 million yuan, climbed 18.7% to 4 trillion yuan, SCMP Economy said.

The report also contrasted the period with 2025, when AI had not yet triggered the data center buildout, and cited earlier NBS data showing China’s integrated circuit production volume rose 23% year on year in the first six months to nearly 280 billion units.
